3. Quaternary palaeoenvironments in Thuringia
1-day excursion name (long):
Quaternary palaeoenvironments in Thuringia

Topics:
Fossil record of late Middle to Late Pleistocene plants, animals and humans, Pleistocene palaeoenvironments, fossil preservation in travertine

Overview:
In the frame of the palaeontological excursion to the classical Quaternary site Weimar-Ehringsdorf, we will visit former travertine quarries that once revealed rich faunas and floras existing from late Middle to Late Pleistocene. The locality is also known as the richest site of hominin remains in Germany and place of extensive Palaeolithic archaeological inventories. The Pleistocene sequence of Weimar-Ehringsdorf comprises 12 faunal complexes that represent different stages in the climate and evolutionary history. The plant species composition, preserved mainly by travertine incrustations of leaves and fructifications, indicates the presence of mixed oak forests and more or less open woodlands existing under interglacial conditions over most of the sequence. Important parts of the profile are still accessible in a scarp kept open for research purposes. Subsequent to the excursion to the travertine quarries, representative botanical and zoological specimens from the profile will be shown in the Museum for Prehistoric and Protohistoric Archaeology and in the collections of the Research Station of Quaternary Palaeontology Weimar.

Programme:
8:00 start in Potsdam
Arrival in Weimar approx. at 11:00

7. Natural and Cultural Heritage of Potsdam by bike
1-day excursion name (long): Natural and Cultural Heritage of Potsdam by bike

Topics:
• Potsdam history and culture
• glacial, periglacial, postglacial land forms and deposits
• anthropogenic impact

Overview:
There are three reasons to visit Potsdam: (1) the historical heritage of Prussian kings and emperors, (2) the dense concentration of manifold fields of research, and (3) the wonderful landscape around Potsdam, which was shaped during the last ice age until today.
There is no better opportunity rather than biking in spring to get a physical and mental impression of landforms and culture of the region. Preformed by natural processes, the country around Potsdam was strongly modified by different ways of land use, depending on geological substrates.
The about 30 km long bike trip will lead us along rivers, lakes, and over hills, flanked by Prussian palaces, traditional villages, and open-air restaurants with tasteful domestic bear and food.
Geological aspects: Fluvial terraces, glacial and postglacial lakes, morainic arcs, dunes, kames forms and outcrops.

• Polar history
• Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research

Overview:
On the Telegrafenberg the Royal Prussian Institutes for Astrophysics, Meteorology and Geodesy are founded between 1874 and 1892. They became birth places for their disciplines and world famous. Here, in 1881 Albert Michelson carried out his fundamental interferometer experiment for the first time what was the basis for Einstein’s theory of relativity. Polar researchers like Nansen, Amundsen and Wegener asked the institutes to support their expeditions with instruments and manpower. The impressive architecture of historical and modern buildings and historical information about the institutes are the aim of this guided tour.

10. Late Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences from Saxony
1-day excursion name (long): Late Pleistocene loess-palaeosol sequences from Saxony

Topics:
Palaeosols in loess, Weichselian loess chronostratigraphy, palaeoenvironmental reconstruction, ice wedge casts, biomarkers in loessOverview:
Participants will be introduced into the loess stratigraphy of Saxony. The stratigraphy will be illustrated at the Ostrau and the Rottewitz loess sections. The visited loess sections are located in the Central Saxon Loess Hills close to the city of Lommatzsch.
The first stop in the morning will be at Ostrau loess section where the major types of glacial pedogenesis in loess will be shown. Major properties of both the loess (grain size, carbonate content, OSL-ages) and of the embedded palaeosols (organic carbonate, biomarkers) will be presented and discussed. Furthermore the long walls of this pit enable to study the distribution of mollusc's shells in the relation to the former periglacial relief.
The second stop in the afternoon will be at the Rottewitz section near the city of Meißen. At this section an older loess package (ca. 60 - 70 ka) is preserved. This section is suitable for discussing biomarker results and their relation to the exposition of the site. Finally a model of loess deposition for the Saxon loess area will be proposed on the basis of the spatial distribution of loess.

Programme:
8:00 a.m. departure from Potsdam
app. 10:30 a.m. arrival at limestone pit Ostrau
13:30 lunch time at the bus (lunch packages)
